According to the 2016 edition of the Guinness Book of World Records, Lucknow, in Uttar Pradesh, India, is now home to the world’s largest school. Last school year, 2,500 teachers were working for that school, education 39,437 students in 1,000 classrooms at Lucknow’s City Montessori School. And by looking at the school website right now, we can see that the number is growing daily.
The Largest School in the World!
Bharti and Jagdish Gandh founded this school in 1959 with just 300 rupees (something along the lines of $5.70 at current exchange rates). Even more striking is the fact that the money was not even theirs. It was borrowes money! And they had a total of five students. Over 50 years later, the school, spreads over quite a few campuses and there’s no single place able to have all their students together at one time.. Those students between the ages of 3 and 17 are divided in classrooms of 45 children each. School fees are $18 for younger students and $47 for older students each month.
Lucknow’s City Montessori School is not known for its size, but over the years it has received numerous awards and both national and international recognition. For instance, in 2002, the UNESCO Prize for Peace Education was awarded to them and just 2 years ago, its founder went on to receive the Dalai Lama Hope for Humanity award.
Even though the size of the Gandhis school seems staggering, it pales when compared to the world’s largest university, which is also located in India: The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), in Delhi, The Indira Gandhi National Open Universityy hosts no less than four million students.
Surprisingly enough, the campus of the this university is extremely small and modest. IGNOU’s number of students has doubled in the last few years, serving as many as 4 million students today, To put this in perspective, this is about 10 times the size of the University of Phoenix’s online campus, in the United States..
